2023 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid Charge Time

2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid Parked

Although plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) have a combustion engine as well as a battery, they are able to drive in battery-only mode for short distances. And just like fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids need their battery charged at a charging station.

PHEV batteries are a good deal smaller than EV batteries, so there’s a significant difference between how fast PHEVs and EVs can be charged. The typical EV requires about nine hours for a full charge with a Level 2 charger. Your plug-in hybrid Sorento charging time should only be about an hour and a half!

If you have further questions about charging times for Kia electrified models, we can help! Check out the guide below from Kia of Cerritos for details.

How Long Does it Take to Charge a Kia Sorento PHEV?

Level 2 chargers vary in the amount of power they supply—anywhere from 7 kW to 19 kW—so the plug-in hybrid Sorento charging time could be faster or slower depending on where you go to charge up. Voltage for Level 2 chargers ranges from 208V for many of the public chargers that you can find around Los Angeles, to 240V for home charging systems.

But how does all of that translate to your plug-in hybrid Sorento charging time? Based on estimates from the Department of Energy, the average Level 2 charger adds about 25 miles of driving range per charging hour. The Sorento plug-in hybrid has an all-electric driving range of 32 miles, so a Level 2 charger should provide you with a full charge in about an hour and a half.

There’s also Level 1 charging, which you can do via a residential 120-volt (120V) AC outlet. However, we recommend using this method only as a backup, if you’re temporarily unable to access a charger and just need a little more juice to get where you’re going. Level 1 chargers add five miles of charge per hour.

Do You Need a Home Charging System for a PHEV?

Since the plug-in hybrid Sorento charging time is so much shorter than for a fully electric vehicle like the Soul EV, it’s certainly possible to rely on public charging stations and Level 2 chargers alone. That said, some Carson-area PHEV owners choose to install home charging systems for added convenience. With a Level 2 charger at home, you can fully charge your vehicle on your own timetable so that it’s ready to go when you are.
